2010 Results

The Fields of Athenry 2010

The Fields of Athenry was held on the Monday 3rd January and had a fine Loughrea Athletic Club contingent. Laura Shaughnessy had an excellent run finishing third in the overall ladies competition in a time of 36:59 followed closely by Thelma Mc Mahon in a time of 43:32. Thelma also finished in ninth position in the overall Senior Ladies. Laura and Thelma were also part of the Senior Ladies Team which came third in the team event along with Susanne Lally and Judith Roche. Judith also won her category F55 in a time of 51:26, another great achievement by Judith. Other fine runs from the club came from Paul Keane who finished in 13th position followed by John Kilraine, Jarlath Fitzgerald, Olivia Deely, Anna Ryan, Orla McCluskey, Hazel Connolly, Cait Quinn and Aisling Deely.

 Laura Wins Renmore Resolution Run!

Laura Shaughnessy from Loughrea Athletic Club had a great start to the New Year by winning the Senior ladies 5km in a time of 18:10 at Renmore on New Years day. A great start to the New Year for Laura!

 At the same event Pat Hannon won the M50 category in 18:35 and T.J Beatty also ran a very respectable time of 21:52.

 New York Marathon

A fine contingent of Loughrea Athletes travelled to compete in the 2010 New York City Marathon on Sunday November 6th 2010. The New York Marathon is one of the World’s greatest Road Races, it attracts more than a 100,000 applicants annually. Crossing the finish line in Central Park is one of the greatest thrills a runner can experience.  Judith Roche was the first lady from the club to feel this thrill, she crossed  the line in 04.28, Sylvia Burke was next home in 04.48 and Veronica Comer was third home in 05.31. Martina Kingsland, Niamh Kingsland and Rose Fahy Hayes competed also in the 26.2 mile race. Martin O’Connor and David Leonard ran alongside with the ladies both finishing around the 5 hour mark. As with all Marathons a serious amount of training and commitment goes into the preparation for the Race, the Club would like to acknowledge and congratulate everyone on their achievement.

Irene Headd competes in Switzerland 

Irene Headd travelled to Switzerland recently to compete in the 26.2  Mile Swiss Marathon. She completed the 26.2 mile race in a time of 3hours 56 minutes. Its no suprise Irene is running a time like this as the past year she been training intensely one could almost say ” she has been doing some  “altitude training”.  Irene resides in Derrybrien which is a well known area for its Hills and challenging routes. The training has sure paid off, as Irene has beaten her previous Mararthon time by over an hour

Connaught Cross Country 2010 Ballina

Laura Shaughnessy and Conor O’Brien of Lougrea A.C. both County Cross country Champions travelled to Ballina to compete in the Connaught Intermediate and even ages Cross Country Championships on Sunday the 31st of October. In a highly competitive field Laura came in second marginally behind  Eimear O’Brien from Sligo who just caught Laura in the last 400M of the race. Conor O’Brien came 4th in the u18 event just short of a bronze Medal.

September Results

Paul Keane came third in the Castledaly 8k held last Saturday. He ran another impressive time of 28.30. Elsewhere, Annettte Keane won her category in the over 40’s 10k Clifden road race in a time of 46.23. She also won her category in the Westport 5k held recently. Well done to Annette.

Streets of Galway 8km

The 25th anniversary of the Streets of Galway took place last Saturday evening, 7th August in Galway city. A total of 2,144 people took part in the run. Loughrea athletic club had an excellent attendance with a total of 29 members taking to the streets! The first male and female home for the club were Paul Keane and Thelma Mc Mahon. Adidas 5 mile Race Series, Dublin

The first leg of the Dublin Race Series took place in Phoenix Park on the 17th July. Judith Roche put in another fine performance coming 3rd in her category F55 in a time of 37:47mins. Well done Judith!

Headford 8km

On the 10th of July, a handful of Loughrea ladies braved the wet and windy conditions in Headford to complete the annual 8km event. Olivia Deely 42:41, Sylvia Burke 45:20, Veronica Comer 45:48 and Andrea Sellars 47:30

Mary Barret set New Irish Record

 

Mary Travelled to England to compete in the British Masters over the week-end. She won 2 Golds in the Shot Putt and Javelin. She won Silver in the High Jump while creating a new Irish Record of 1.39M. She also won 2 Bronze in the 80M Hurdles and Discus.

Achill Half Marathon

Judith Roche wins her Category over 55 in the Achill Half Marathon in a time of 1.54.33. Catherine Kelly finished under the 2 hour mark in a very respectable time of 1:59 with Anna Ryan crossing the line in 2:17. The Achill Half is not a race to be underestimated it is up there with the Conemara Half if not even more difficult.So I hear as I have not yet braved it!!

Clare People 10k Staurday 26th July 2010

Paul Keane strikes again, coming in 10th place in a time of 34:40 what a time. Over 15oo people took part in this well known event held on Saturday last at 10 o’clock in the morning.

Mary sets Irish Age Record

Mary Barret competed in the Northern Ireland Masters last Sunday the 27th, She came home with 4 Golds in the Javelin, Discus, 80M Hurdle and Long Jump. She set a new Irish Age Record in the 80M Hurdles and a Pb of

14.3 seconds!

Connaught Track&Field Results 2010

Mary Barret wins Gold in the Senior 100M Hurdles, High Jump, Discus, Shot Putt and Javelin.

Melissa Barret wins Gold in the U18 Discus and Javelin.

U16 Justin Cooney won 2 Silvers in the 100m Hurdles and Long Jump, he came 4th in the High Jump.

Emmet Creaven  Bronze Medal in the U18  1oom Sprint and Bronze in the U18 Triple Jump. He also came 4th in the U18 Long Jump.

T.J Beatty wins category in Chicago heat!

On June 17th T.J Beatty had a very fine run to win his age category in a 5km road race in Chicago.  With 1300 participants, high humidity and temperatures exceeding 89 degress T.J  finished in a time of 22:20

Galway Womens Mini Marathon 2010

The Galway Womens Mini Marathon took place on Sunday 27th June and 9 Loughrea ladies took to the roads!

Over 700 started the 10km event which started on the promenade in Salthill facing into a very stiff breeze, turning up the long climb of Threadaneedle Road and returning via Knocknacarra and back down the familiar prom! Thelma Mc Mahon was the first Loughrea lady home followed by Audrey Mc Mahon, Catherine Kelly, Deirdre Hardiman, Valarie Burke, Joan Whelan, Veronica Comer, Sylvia Burke and Cait Quinn

Fionnula Keane wins Bronze at the Mini Marathon

Fionnula stormed her way through the Flora Mini Marathon on Monday to claim bronze in the over 35 category. She ran a time of 39.49 breaking the 40 minute mark. Plenty of Loughrea Athletes travelled to Dublin to compete in this prestigious fundraising event so well done to everyone

Paul Keane braved the harsh weather conditions to finish 2nd in the Salthill 5k .Paul ran another impressive time of 17:12 averaging 5.30 minute mile pace

Kilcornan 8km Forest Run 

Well done to the 14 Loughrea athletes who took part in the 8km forest run on Sunday 16th May. The course was a mixture of road and through the forest! West of Ireland Womens Mini Marathon

Audrey Mc Mahon and Catherine Kelly ran the West of Ireland Womens Mini Marathon in Castlebar on the 2nd May. 3,000 ladies took part. Catherine Kelly finished in 120th position in a time of 55:01. Audrey finished in 36th position in a time of 49:30.

Annette Keane ran the Bay Run Half Marathon in West Cork on Sunday the 9th May. She ran it in 01:42:28.

Kildare Half Mararthon

David, Sheila and Marie Reilly travelled to Kildare yesterday Sunday the 9th to compete in the Kildare Half Mararthon.

David finished the 13 mile race in a time of 01:32:21,
Sheila finished it in 01:55:54,
and Marie in a time of 01:51:24.
A very well organised race everyone was hugely impressed with the event

April Results

Fionnuala Keane travelled to Rotterdam on Sunday the 11th of April to compete in the 30th Rotterdam Mararthon. She ran under the 3 hours in a impressive time of 2:58:38. It was a windy and rather cold day which made running the 26.2 mile race that more challenging, However Fionnuala was delighted with her time.

Also on Sunday nearer by Paul Keane ran in the well known Kilnaboy 10 miler. Paul described the course as tough and very hot due to teh recent heat wave that has hit Ireland. Paul still managed to run a super time of 64 minutes, averaging a 6 minute mile pace.

The Conemaraathon was held on Sunday also three Loughrea athletes braved the Half Marathon, David and Cait Quinn and Stephen Connaire were. A huge turnout as usual, super day all around.

All Ireland Junior Cross Country

Laura Shaughnessy made a welcome return to top class cross-country action when competing in the All- Ireland Junior championships in Kilbeggan Racecourse on Sunday last.
In very difficult, windy conditions, Laura claimed the silver medal behind the Northern Ireland Athlete Ciare Mageean with another Northern Ireland athlete in third place.
The performance guarantees Laura a place on the Irish team for the European Cross-Country Championships in Santry Demesne Dublin on Dec 13th next.
As this is the first time that these Championships are going to held in Ireland, competition for places on the Irish Teams was particularly intense.

The day before the Dublin City Marathon, 6 club members took on the much shorter distance of 5 kilometres.
